Eczema

I was suffering from eczema for a short period of time, it was so uncomfortable that I had trouble sleeping at night and scratched my neck to the point that it would bleed due to the irritable itch. I was searching for treatment all over the place until I found the magic solution that would help me eradicate my eczema.

Eczema is a chronic skin condition that causes the skin to be itchy, scaly, irritated, or inflamed. It is a symptom of an overactive response to an irritant from our body’s immune system.

What causes eczema?

Eczema is commonly caused by stress, emotional traumas, environmental toxins, allergies, etc. Eczema is also common in families with a history of asthma or other allergies.

Types of eczema

Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema but is not contagious. It commonly affects children but it may also affect people of other ages. Research suggests that atopic dermatitis may be genetic. It often affects people who have hay fever or asthma or those with a family history of eczema, asthma or hay fever. The thinner layers of the skin cells are more vulnerable to agitation such as the face, hands, inner elbows, etc.

Contact dermatitis is a second common form of eczema which can develop after a person touches allergy triggers or irritants such as household chemicals. If you have eczema, it is recommended to avoid future contact with the irritant or allergy triggers.

Simple tips to prevent eczema flare-ups

Cosmetics

      • Choose cosmetics wisely. Many over-the-counter creams contain artificial ingredients and petroleum products which can adversely affect the skin, speeding up its deterioration and further thinning the skin layers.
      • Limit excessive scrubbing of your face and neck because they have thin layers that are very vulnerable. Each time you scrub your skin, you are taking away your precious skin cells.
      • Your skin is the largest organ of the body and hydration is very important for it. Commercial moisturizers actually do not moisturize your skin very well. They cover the surface of your skin but aren’t able to reach the inner layers blocking fresh air from reaching your skin and not allowing it to breathe freely. Thus, dirt, germs, and triggers for eczema can be trapped on the surface of your skin and increase the risk of developing an over-active response from your immune system.

Skin hydration

      • Use natural products to hydrate your skin. Right after a shower, your skin cells are slightly expanded and this is the best time to hydrate your skin by massaging your body with natural moisturizers such as coconut oil.

Steroids

      • Use steroids wisely. Repeated usage of artificial steroids not only leads to the thinning of your skin but also delivers more “non-active” ingredients, such as emollients and other chemicals, into your bloodstream which in turn would increase the workload for your liver and other organs to detoxify and remove them from your body.

Humidifier

      • Adjust the humidity level in your home. The humidity indoors tends to drop, especially in the winter with a heating system. A humidifier can help balance the humidity and provide adequate hydration for your skin all night long.
      • Enjoy outer door activities. Sunlight helps convert vitamin D to its active form which is important for your immune system and skin growth.

Reduce stress

    • Reduce stress. Studies suggest that eczema has a strong correlation to stress.[1] Stress increases cortisol levels in your body and promotes inflammation. Make sure you eat well and sleep well. Meditation, relaxation music; hypnosis, and yoga are all useful techniques to reduce stress.
If you are suffering from insomnia, many effective tips in How to Cure Insomnia may help you improve your sleep quality.
    • Dress comfortably and wear non-irritating clothes made from cotton, linen, or bamboo. Comfortable clothes leave room for your skin to breathe. Also, try and avoid harsh artificial soaps and detergents, instead, use natural soaps, body washes, and shampoos as much as possible.
    • Identify triggers for eczema. Keep a diary to document what the triggers may be and avoid those triggers as much as possible. Avoid scratching. Scratching can further aggravate the skin and make the symptoms worse along with increasing the risk of infection. It is important to keep your nails short and clean.

Enjoy a nutritious anti-eczema diet

whole food based diet

      • Choose a diet that is whole food based, go organic if possible, and make sure you’re your plate is topped with fresh fruits and vegetables which will nourish and rejuvenate your skin. You can read A Super Charged Anti-aging Diet Part One for more tips to speed up your anti-aging process.

Essential oils from food

      • Make sure that you are receiving an adequate amount of Vitamin E, protein, and essential oils from your diet which will help strengthen your skin cells. Foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish, oysters, chia seeds, hemp seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts, etc. And foods that are rich in vitamin E are avocado, nuts and seeds, spinach, fish, etc. You can read about Chia Seeds to explore their amazing health benefits.

Environmental allergens

    • Eliminating possible allergens in your diet which may aggravate eczemas such as wheat, soy, eggs, nuts, and cow’s milk. Reduce refined sugars and processed carbohydrate-rich foods in your diet.

Other alternative therapies
Herbs

Herbs: Based on a study from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, it has been discovered that a traditional Chinese herbal concoction, consisting of Flos lonicerae (Japanese honeysuckle), Herba menthae (peppermint), Cortex moutan (root bark of peony tree), Atractylodes Rhizome (underground stem of the atractylodes herb) and Cortex phellodendri (Amur cork tree bark) may help improve eczema.

Bleach baths: Researchers from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine found that bleach bath treats children’s chronic eczema effectively. Subjects soak in the very diluted bleach baths for 5-10 minutes, twice a week for three months.[2]
Light therapy
Light Therapy (Phototherapy): Light therapy is very effective as well. It involves using natural or artificial light such as ultraviolet A (UVA) or ultraviolet B (UVD) light. It is important that it is performed by a qualified healthcare professional.
