In part one, I discussed the key nutrients for optimal thyroid function. Let’s examine the dietary factors that can help improve thyroid issues.
Here are the key nutrients for thyroid function.
gluten free diet
Gluten-freeDiet
A gluten-free diet is often associated with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and celiac disease. Some studies suggest a gluten-free diet may help reduce thyroid antibody levels (anti-TPO and anti-Tg) in people with Hashimoto’s. These studies indicate a positive effect of gluten deprivation on thyroid function and its inflammation. Therefore, avoiding gluten in the diet may help alleviate some symptoms of Hashimoto’s.

Let’s talk about natural remedies to support thyroid function.

bugleweed Bugleweed
In traditional herbal medicine, the leaves and stems of the bugleweed plant have been used to treat thyroid imbalances, reduce inflammation, and support respiratory health. It can inhibit elevated thyroid-stimulating hormones (TSH) and balance thyroid hormone levels. Bugleweed contains flavonoids and phenolic acids, which act as natural thyroid inhibitors. These compounds can help treat mild hyperthyroidism and manage symptoms of an overactive thyroid, such as rapid heart rate and anxiety. This calming effect may also support those with Graves’ disease by acting against antibodies that cause Graves’ disease.

Bugleweed also seems to enhance the body’s ability to effectively use iodine. It has been shown to help reduce the symptoms of mild hyperthyroidism. It is effective like beta-blockers for protecting the heart from the damage of hyperthyroidism. Studies have indicated that bugleweed and lemon balm may block or decrease thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and reduce T3 and T4 hormone levels, which reduces the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

Bugleweed’s antispasmodic and expectorant properties help relax bronchial muscles and reduce inflammation, which helps relieve asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions. By improving airflow and clearing excess mucus from the respiratory tract, bugleweed helps relieve nasal congestion, coughing, and shortness of breath. Bugleweed has antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial properties that have been used in traditional medicine for centuries to fight infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs) and respiratory illnesses.

Bugleweed also helps relieve pain and improve mobility in those with joint pain and arthritis due to its high content of flavonoids and tannins, which inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that contribute to chronic inflammation.Bugleweed - A Thyroid ProtectorBugleweed also helps relieve insomnia and sleep disturbances due to its calming effect. It promotes relaxation without the risk of dependency or side effects of sleep drugs.
In summary, the amazing health benefits of bugleweed include the following:

  • Promotes thyroid health and balances thyroid hormones.
  • Support respiratory function by increasing airflow and reducing excess mucus.
  • Relieves arthritis and gout due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Improves sleep quality and relieves insomnia.

A sluggish thyroid function can not only affect your weight but also your energy levels and metabolism. Apart from metabolism, thyroid hormones affect breathing, the nervous system, heart function, body temperature, etc. Untreated hypothyroidism can contribute to hypertension, dyslipidemia, infertility, cognitive impairment, and neuromuscular dysfunction. Let’s shed some light on how to boost your thyroid function from ancient Ayurvedic medicine.

bacopaBacoba
Bacopa (Bacopa monnieri) is a plant that’s been used in traditional Ayurvedic Indian medicine for centuries. Native to Asian countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, China, and Vietnam, it is also known as Brahmi, water hyssop, and Herb of Grace. All parts of the plant are used for medicinal purposes.

There are several beneficial compounds in bacopa, including the following: brahmin and other alkaloids, flavonoids such as luteolin, saponins including bacosides and bacopasides, and bacopa saponins, triterpenes such as beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol.

Bacopa increases levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which enhances cognition and mental capacities. The body uses acetylcholine to counteract the fight-or-flight response. When the brain is resting, it facilitates a higher state of consciousness and enhances brain functions such as memory and attention. Bacopa inhibits acetylcholinesterase, which is the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, and activates choline acetyltransferase, which is the enzyme that produces acetylcholine.
Bacopa can also increase serotonin and GABA levels in the brain. Serotonin improves mood and sleep quality, and GABA increases feelings of calmness and reduces anxiety. Bacopa seems to calm down overstimulated activities in the brain, which might explain its potential anti-seizure benefits. Studies have found that Bacopa contains various substances that reduce free radicals, inflammation, and oxidative stress. It also reduces beta-amyloid plaque build-up, which is a key marker in Alzheimer’s disease and brain aging.

Bacopa - A Brain RescuerBacopa is an adaptogenic herb that increases the body’s resistance to stress and prevents adrenal fatigue. Research suggests that Bacopa helps reduce stress and anxiety by elevating mood and reducing the stress hormone cortisol. Bacopa contains active components called bacosides, which help reduce inflammation. Some studies have shown that Bacopa inhibits inflammatory chemicals, cytokines, and enzymes that are responsible for brain inflammation. Some research also suggests that Bacopa can lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels and arteries. It also works on nitric oxide and acts on the muscles of your blood vessels to reduce high blood pressure.

Bacopa may have potential benefits for thyroid function, according to studies. Thyroxin is a complex hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Studies have shown that Bacopa acts as a potent stimulant to prevent hypothyroidism by boosting the concentration of thyroxine, which suggests that Bacopa has a stimulatory effect on the thyroid gland. It regulates the T4 level in the thyroid gland and can be used to treat hypothyroidism.

Here are some amazing health benefits of Bacopa:

  • Improves cognitive function and prevents dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Contains antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties that reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain.
  • Reduces anxiety and depression and improves mood.
  • Benefits individuals with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) related symptoms.
  • May have anti-Parkinson effects.
  • Helps improve thyroid function.

In general, Bacopa is safe and non-toxic for most individuals. The most common side effect of bacopa supplements is related to digestive issues, such as nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, and fatigue. It might also slow the gut transit time, which can cause issues with people who have gastroparesis. Bacopa might also increase the levels of stomach acids, which may worsen stomach ulcers for some people. In theory, Bacopa might slow the heart rate. People with a slow heart rate, known as bradycardia, should be cautious with the herb.

The optimal dosage of Bacopa is typically related to total bacoside content, which appears to be around 300mg if it is standardized to 55% of bacosides. Some supplements may also only have a 10 to 20% bacoside content. In this case, you need a higher dose of 750mg. Since it is a fat-soluble substance, it is recommended to take it with meals for better absorption.

guggul herbGuggul is the common name for the flowering Mukul myrrh tree, which is derived from an oily sap of the Mukul myrrh tree. This tree is a shrub with thin, shiny bark and thorny branches. It is commonly found in India and other dry regions such as Northern Africa and Central Asia. Guggul is known by the Sanskrit name “Guggulu,” which means “protects from disease”. There are many varieties of Guggulu, and each has different uses, which are determined in part by the color and age of the resinous myrrh gum. Guggul was once relatively abundant in many parts of India. However, it is very difficult to harvest the resinous sap without damaging the tree, leaving it susceptible to infection and decline. You may not be aware that the trees take several years to mature to the point where they can be safely harvested, and they need time to recover between harvest periods. Without this recovery period, they are at risk of damage and even death.

The health benefits of guggul are traced back hundreds of years in India. People in the past used it as Ayurvedic medicine. Traditionally, guggul was used for joint pain, weight management, liver problems, intestinal worms, ulcers, bladder infections, and heart problems. Guggul is known for its powerful detoxifying and rejuvenating qualities. In general, Guggulu has an affinity for all of the tissues in the body as well as the circulatory, digestive, nervous, and respiratory systems. The active ingredient in Guggul extract is known as guggulsterone, which has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties at the cellular level. Guggulsterone also has been shown to upregulate the bile salt export pump, which is responsible for the removal of cholesterol metabolites from the liver. Studies have shown that guggul can reduce the symptoms of hypothyroidism by increasing T3 levels and T4 levels and improving liver conversion of thyroid hormones. It also increases iodine uptake, which is needed to make thyroid hormones. Studies have indicated that the consumption of guggul extract increases iodine uptake by the body and stimulates the synthesis of thyroid hormones, which keeps the thyroid gland healthy and active. Guggul may not produce noticeable benefits for those who do not have a thyroid gland or have undergone radioactive iodine treatment. Because much of its benefit comes in boosting the function of the existing thyroid gland.

Researches suggest that taking guggul orally can help treat severe acne on the face, chest, and back, and prevent acne outbreaks. Guggul promotes skin health through collagen production. It also restrains the growth of skin-damaging enzymes. Guggul - The Fruit of the Spirit
Guggulsterone, an active ingredient of guggul, can break down fat cells (lipolysis), which promotes weight loss. Guggulu supports weight loss by removing accumulated toxins and excessive buildup of tissues. It also supports the digestion of oils and fats. It also has effects on specific fat-storing hormones such as insulin, leptin, and thyroid hormone. These 3 hormones help regulate the metabolism and also influence satiety and appetite.
Guggulsterone helps reduce inflammation, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome, which leads to improved function of arteries and the heart. Its cholesterol-lowering activity is responsible for preventing fat deposition within blood vessels; as a result, it helps prevent plaque formation and reduces the risk of heart disease. Guggulu reduces inflammation in the joints and lubricates and rejuvenates the tissues within and around the joints, which supports the movement of joints.

Here are some amazing health benefits of Guggulu:

  • Balances cholesterol levels.
  • Boosts thyroid function.
  • Promotes weight loss.
  • Reduces acne and prevents acne outbreaks.
  • Reduces pain and inflammation in arthritis.
  • Reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Provides anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic properties.
  • Detoxifies and rejuvenates the body.

Because of guggulu’s subtle and penetrating qualities, it is often used to carry other substances deep into the tissues. The qualities of the other herbs help direct where exactly the Guggulu travels in the body, and its combination with other herbs enhances its detoxifying and rejuvenating qualities.

Guggul is taken orally through supplements. There is no well-established and precise dosing guideline currently. However, the following dosages have been claimed effective in some studies. The dosage ranges from 50mg up to 500mg (or more) in some cases.

  • For Thyroid Function: 500 to 1,000 mg per day
  • For Weight Loss: 500 to 1,000 mg per day
  • For Inflammation: 500 mg per day

Guggul also poses risks when it is combined with certain medications. It is best to be cautious or avoid taking guggul with other medications. Excessive use can lead to dryness of the mouth, impotency, vertigo, and affect the liver or lungs. Guggul should be avoided for pregnancy, during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in cases of excessive uterine bleeding or acute kidney infection.

Here are a few ways to use guggul externally: in a healing balm to promote healthy skin and improve the movement of joints. You can also use Guggul for gargling to support healthy oral mucus membranes, teeth, and gums.

Your mouth is the entrance of your gut; therefore, taking care of oral health plays a critical role in your gut health. Here are more tips to improve your oral health.

AshwagandhaAshwagandha
Ashwagandha is a popular adaptogenic herb, and many studies have shown it has adaptogenic, anti-stress, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, and analgesic properties. An adaptogen is a substance that can raise the body’s resilience to various types of physical and emotional stress. Stress can contribute to adrenal dysfunction, which is a common trigger for Hashimoto’s. Adaptogens help reduce adrenal dysfunction by normalizing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Ashwagandha contains alkaloids, steroidal, and saponin chemicals that are essential for active hormonal pathways in the body. These chemical components are involved in increasing the production of the T4 hormone and the conversion of T4 to T3.
