-Bitter melon-Insulin sensitivity is how efficiently your cells respond to insulin, which is a hormone produced by the pancreas that is responsible for regulating blood sugar levels. When you are insulin sensitive, your body can utilize glucose as an energy source efficiently. But when the body cells no longer respond properly, it leads to insulin resistance, which causes blood sugar and insulin levels to rise. This increases your risk for chronic health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s is often called “type 3 diabetes” because it involves similar brain insulin resistance, where brain cells can’t use insulin properly for energy, which leads to cognitive decline, inflammation, and amyloid plaque buildup in the brain. Insulin resistance is a ‘silent killer’ that’s often overlooked.

Dietary management is the foundation for managing insulin resistance. A healthy diet that is rich in fiber and a clean source of protein, especially from plants, can be a good starting point. I have discussed dietary approaches for health and longevity in the past.

In the previous content, I discussed natural remedies to curb sugar cravings and replace sugar with healthy alternatives.

In this content, I am focusingon some natural remedies to improve blood sugar control and reduce insulin resistance.

Bitter Melon
Have you heard of bitter melon? Bitter melon is also known as bitter guard or karela. It is a tropical vine in the gourd family and is closely related to zucchini, squash, pumpkin, and cucumber. It’s cultivated around the world as an edible fruit and has been widely used as a vegetable in Asian cuisine. The fruit and seeds are used to make medicine in Asia. Until recently, people started to pay attention to its amazing medicinal benefits.
Based on recent research, bitter melon is considered an “anti-diabetic, anti-HIV and anti-tumor agent”. The specific phenolic and flavonoid compounds in bitter melon possess potent anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties.Bitter-melon-They also help reduce high blood sugar for diabetes, relieve respiratory issues, such as bronchitis and asthma, and even treat skin issues such as psoriasis. In traditional Chinese medicine, bitter melon has been used to reduce fatty liver symptoms, detoxify the blood, and improve liver function. It is truly an amazing healing food on your dinner table.
Cooked bitter melon is more delicious than the raw ones, but you can try fresh bitter melon juice to fully benefit from its medicinal values. If the taste of the fresh juice is too strong, you can add some raw honey to neutralize its bitter taste. The most popular dishes of bitter melon are made from stir-fry; it goes well with other vegetables too, such as mushrooms, tomatoes, and eggplants.

Bitter Melon (Karela) – A Potent Anti-cancer Weapon

  • A powerful hypoglycemicagent that lowers blood sugar for diabetes.
  • Reduces the inflammation and relieves pain and bleeding of hemorrhoids when you create a paste texture and apply it topically.
  • Inhibits cancer cell growth through the regulation of cell homeostasis and cell-death machineries.
  • Relieves respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis.
  • Rich in anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce the irritating itching skin conditions and infections such as psoriasis.
  • Prevents eye-related disorders with rich Vitamin A and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Boost immune functions with Vitamin C and antioxidants.

Precautions: Avoid consuming bitter melon during pregnancy as it can stimulate excess menstrual bleeding.

Banaba Leaves
Banaba leaves, derived from the Lagerstroemia speciosa tree native to Southeast Asia, have been used for centuries in traditional medicine. Banaba-Leaf-One of the most notable benefits of Banaba leaves is their ability to regulate blood sugar levels. This is primarily due to the presence of corosolic acid, a compound that mimics insulin by helping glucose move out of the bloodstream and into cells. Corosolic acid lowers blood sugar levels by increasing insulin sensitivity, enhancing glucose uptake, and inhibiting alpha-glucosidase, which is an enzyme that helps digest carbs. Corosolic acid prevents the body from making glucose for energy from non-carbohydrates, which opposes gluconeogenesis. That’s why it’s claimed to have an insulin-like effect.
Banaba leaf extract contains gallotannins, which are a subclass of tannic acid. Tannic acid inhibits the production of endothelin-1, a protein that is heavily involved in heart disease. In several clinical trials, banana leaf extract is linked to improved lipid metabolism and weight loss. Recent studies have linked banaba leaves with anti-obesity activity, as they may inhibit adipogenesis and lipogenesis, which are the formation of fat cells and fat molecules.

Corosolic, gallic, and ellagic acid in banaba leaf extract inhibits enzymes that viruses use to take over human cells. These acids help prevent viral infection from pathogens such as HRV-4 (Human Rhinovirus) and HIV in cells. The antibacterial activity was shown to be possibly caused by the tannins and triterpenoids found in banaba.
Banaba leaves are rich in antioxidants, including ellagic acid, gallic acid, and corosolic acid. Ellagic acid helps to prevent oxidative stress, scavenge free radicals, and shield cells from damage. These compounds help neutralize free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and preventing cellular damage.
Banaba-leaf-one-Recent studies suggest that banaba leaf extract may promote the programmed cell death of lung and liver cancer cells. It may protect against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus megaterium, and anti-human rhinovirus (HRV), which is a cause of the common cold. Banaba leaf extract is often used as a complementary treatment for diabetes. It can be found in various forms, including capsules, tablets, and teas. Regular consumption can help maintain stable blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. Banaba leaf tea is a popular way to consume this herb. More research is needed to determine exact dosage recommendations.
Because Banaba leaves can lower blood sugar levels, there is a risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially in individuals who take other medications for diabetes. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Banaba leaves, such as skin rashes, itching, or swelling. High doses of Banaba leaf extract may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, including nausea, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Therefore, starting with a lower dose and gradually increasing it can help minimize these side effects.

Olive leaves have been a therapeutic herbal remedy for various health challenges for centuries. Olive leaves contain many health-beneficial nutrients and bioactive components. -Olive-Leaf-A-Blood-Sugar-Regulator-The main active phenolic component in olive leaves is oleuropein, which contains 6%-9% of the leaves and has been well studied for its promisingeffects on human health. In addition, olive leaf also contains other bioactive components, such as secoiridoids, flavonoids, triterpenes, and lignans, all of which contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, and antihypertensive properties. In old times, olive leaves were used in drinks and teas to lower feversand as a treatment for malaria. Olive leaf is also infused to stabilize blood sugar and control diabetes.Recently, studies have shownthat olive leaf extract (OLE) providesbenefits to people with diabetes. OLE has been shown to increase pancreatic beta-cell activity, insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1, insulin sensitivity, and glucagon-like peptide-1 concentration, and to decrease intestinal glucose uptake, cortisol levels, and psychological stress. These integrated actions help regulate blood glucose levels. Research indicates that Olive Leaf Extract helps improve glycemic control by inhibiting the activity of certain enzymes involved in carbohydrate digestion. This leads to slower absorption of sugars and a more gradual rise in blood glucose levels after meals. According to one study published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition Research, olive leaf extract helped improve insulin sensitivity by 15% in overweight adults given a calorie-restricted diet.
Olive leaf extract is available in the form of capsules, tablets, and a tea. When using these products, it is better to follow the manufacturer’s directions on safe dosages.
