You may wonder why people suffer from coughing more often in the fall and winter. This has to go back to the ancient wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). According to TCM, the energy is peaking in the lungs in autumn. As a result, those who have a history of asthma or bronchitis may experience more coughing than others during this season. But don’t worry, you will find the solutions here because I am going to introduce a few simple tricks that will calm your coughs quickly and easily.

According to TCM, there are a few types of coughs. One type is due to excessive Yang energy manifested as heat in your lungs. This type of cough usually combines with a sore throat, dry cough, constipation, or even a fever. Let’s work on the solutions for this type of coughing first.

1. Fig and honey drink:

Ingredients:

  • Figs (dried): 30g
  • Honey (raw): 1 tbsp.

Instructions: Add 2 cups of water to a pot, put the dried figs into the pot, and bring it to boil with medium heat, turn the heat to low heat to cook for 15 minutes, then let it cool down, and add raw honey to the fig water and mix well before you drink. Take this fig and honey drink once a day for 3 to 5 days and you should notice the amazing result.

Benefits: Reduce phlegm and soothe the lungs. Treat coughing, hoarseness, sore throat, constipation, hemorrhoid bleeding, etc.

2. Steamed pear with honey:

Ingredients:

  • Pear (fresh): 1
  • Honey (raw): 1 tbsp.

Instructions: First, take the core out of the pear. Steam this pear for 10 minutes, let it cool down, and fill the honey in the core of the pear. Steaming helps reduce the cold nature of the pear, so people with a sensitive stomach can also enjoy it. Take it twice a day in the morning and evening. As you enjoy this delicious dessert, you will notice that your coughs are going away.

Benefits: Calm the coughs and reduce phlegm. Treat Yin energy deficiency-related dry coughs, dry throat, hot hands and feet, irritability, etc.

Another type of cough is due to some chronic health conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. This type of cough has frequent flare-ups due to the weak Qi (energy) in the lungs. Here are a few solutions to boost the Qi (energy) in the lungs and calm the coughs.

3. Egg and honey drink:

Ingredients:

  • Egg: 1
  • Honey (raw): 1 tbsp.
  • Ginger (fresh): 2 slices

Instructions: Beat the egg in a bowl without the shell and stir well, then boil one cup of water in a pot, as the water is boiling, turn off the heat and stir in the egg and add honey and ginger as well. Mix thoroughly. Take this drink before your breakfast and supper twice a day. You will be amazed at how fast your coughing stops.

Benefits: Tonify the Qi (energy) in the lungs and treat chronic coughing that is not healing.

4. Peanut and date soup:

Ingredients:

Peanuts (raw, without shell): 30g
Honey (raw): 1/2 tbsp.
Honey dates (dried): 5
Instructions: Put all the ingredients in a pot, add 2 cups of water to the mixture, bring to boil with medium heat, and then cook it with low heat for 20 minutes. Drink this soup twice a day in the morning and evening. It is a great remedy for coughing.

Benefits: Reduce phlegm, and treat chronic coughing and shortness of breath.

Coughing at night can be annoying and here comes the remedy.

5. Sesame seeds and honey drink:

Ingredients:

  • Sesame seeds (raw): 15g
  • Honey (raw): 1/2 tbsp.

Instructions: Put all the ingredients in a cup and stir in the boiling water, drink it as a tea during the day. It is a great remedy for night coughing.

Benefits: Treat coughing at night.

Another most common type of cough is triggered by a cold or flu during the cold season, here are a few tricks to stop this annoying coughing.

6. White radish and green onion soup:

Ingredients:

Radish (white): 1
Green onion roots: 6
Ginger (fresh): 3 slices
Instructions: First cut the radish into small pieces and put them in a pot, add 3 cups of water to bring to boil with medium heat, then cook it with low heat for 10 minutes, add chopped green onion roots and ginger slices, and cook for another 10 minutes, take this soup daily as a wonderful cough remedy.

Benefits: Reduce phlegm and stop coughs. Treating a cough that is triggered by a cold or flu, also relieves body aches and chills associated with flu.

7. White radish and white pepper drink:

Ingredients:

  • Radish (white): 1
  • White pepper: 5
  • Ginger (fresh): 3 slices
  • Tangerine peel (dried): 1 piece

Instructions: Put all the ingredients in a pot, add 2 ½ cups of water and bring to boil with medium heat, then cook for 30 minutes with low heat, enjoy this drink at least twice a day to maximize its amazing health benefits.

Benefits: This recipe is great for reducing excessive phlegm and also stops coughing quickly.

8. Corn silk and tangerine peel drink:


Ingredients:

Corn silk (dried): ½ cup
Tangerine peels (dried): 3 pieces
Instructions: Put all the ingredients in a pot, add 2 cups of water and bring to boil with medium heat, and then cook for 15 minutes with low heat. Enjoy this drink as a tea at least twice a day to get the most out of it.

Benefits: Treat a cough triggered by a cold or flu. It also reduces phlegm.

  • Tofu: 500g
  • Brown sugar: 100g
