There are many causes of puffy eyes such as fluid retention, stress, allergies, lack of sleep, and fluctuating hormones. You may not be aware that hormone imbalance can lead to fluid retention. A typical example is estrogen dominance and excessive cortisol due to stress. Low thyroid hormone can also cause puffy eyes. According to Dr. John Lee, a health expert, when too few thyroid hormones fail to suppress the cells of connective tissues, these cells release excessive water-binding molecules and cause excessive water expansion into the tissues around the eyes, leading to puffy eyes. Another common cause of puffy eyes is tiredness of the eyes due to not enough sleep, or prolonged reading, especially on the computer screen. You can read Why Are You Suffering from PMS and Sugar Cravings and 23 Tips to Fix It to find out why hormone imbalance can cause water retention and how to resolve the issue. The skin around your eyes is very delicate and requires extra care. Here are a few quick fixes and beauty tips to keep puffy eyes at bay. Home remediesCucumber and potato slices: Cucumbers and potatoes have astringent properties that cause the blood vessel to constrict, and help soothe eyes due to their smooth texture. To achieve the best result, keep the slices in a refrigerator and place freshly cut slices on your closed eyes while resting, 5-10 minutes to reduce puffiness.Egg whites: Similar to potatoes and cucumbers, egg whites also have astringent chemicals that help the skin. Apply a thin layer of fresh egg white with a brush or soft wet towel underneath your eyes. Leave for 10 minutes and wash away the residue of egg white with cold water.Cold water: Wash your face with cold water. Cold water helps constrict blood vessels and reduces puffiness. Diet and nutrition tips Follow a low-salt diet: Table salt holds water in the body and causes water retention. Limit processed foods as they are normally loaded with table salt such as pizza and potato chips. Use spices to enhance the flavor of your dishes instead of salt. Enjoy fresh food as much as possible. You can also drain canned food to reduce the salt content before using, such as canned beans and vegetables. Sea salt is a much healthier choice to go. Drink plenty of water: Dehydration is another cause of puffy eyes, make sure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day, and reduce water intake late at night. Limit caffeine and alcohol: Both caffeine and alcohol cause dehydration. Alcohol also leads to water retention in your face, and too much caffeine can affect your sleep. Load your plate with dark leafy vegetables : Dark green vegetables such as spinach, kale, and lettuce contain lutein and zeaxanthin. They are two important nutrients that have antioxidant effects to prevent the aging process of the eyes. Have fatty fish twice a week: Omega-3 fatty acids in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, and tuna have potent anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties that protect and nourish your eyes.Enjoy bright color vegetables and fruits more often: Bright orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots and oranges contain beta-carotene and Vitamin C. Beta-carotene is the precursor of Vitamin A. They help improve the appearance of your eyes by thickening the eyelid dermis. Vitamin C also helps strengthen blood vessel walls. Don’t forget to add Vitamin K into your diet : Vitamin K helps blood coagulation and circulation. Poor blood circulation can contribute to puffy eyes. Make sure you add Vitamin K rich food into your diet such as spinach, broccoli, asparagus, herbs, and other dark green vegetables. Include adequate protein in your diet: Protein promotes the growth of muscle cells and collagen. It helps reduce wrinkles around your eyes and increases the elasticity of the skin. Chicken, seafood, and lentils are good sources of protein. Lentils also contain zinc, which helps release Vitamin A from the liver to benefit your eye tissue. Vitamin E and the beauty of your eyes: Vitamin E works as an antioxidant and helps protect your eyes from free radicals damages. Wheat germ is a good source of vitamin E, you can add it to hot cereals or smoothies. Other vitamin-rich foods are nuts, seeds, avocados, and shellfish.Enjoy A Super Charged Anti-aging Diet Part One for more anti-aging tips. A good night’s sleep is the best treatment for your eye issues. Give your eyes a gentle massage: Close your eyes and gently massage your eyes with your ring finger in a circle from the inside corner toward the outside corner, and give extra massage under both of your eyes in an arc shape. This only takes a few minutes every day. The best time to treat your eyes is after you wash your face in the morning. Before you go to bed, apply a good eye cream and gently massage your eyes to enhance the result. Removing makeup around your eyes at night is a good idea as it can fill the pores and cause puffiness. Avoid rubbing your eyes roughly. Check your thyroid function: Puffy eyes may relate to your low thyroid hormone levels. The thyroid gland is an important organ that regulates metabolism. It affects both energy levels and body weight. If you suffer from fatigue, low energy, and unexplained weight gain, you may have low thyroid hormone levels. The condition is called hypothyroidism. Check with your healthcare professional.Rest your eyes from time to time: Take a break every 30 minutes while reading or on the computer. Close your eyes to rest for a few minutes and look out the window if possible. Eye relaxing exercises Here are a few simple eye exercises to practice on a daily basis. Blink your eyes for a few seconds. Make different eye movements such as up and down, left to right and make a circle both clockwise and counterclockwise to help reduce eye strain. Change your focus and look far away at the sky or a distant object outside for 10 seconds. Looking far away relaxes the focusing muscles inside the eyes and this reduces eye fatigue. Switch the distance, look far away at an object for 10 seconds, and then gaze at something close for another 10 seconds. Practice this switch a few times, as it helps relax different muscle groups around your eyes. What are your beauty tips? Please share with us.Insomnia is another for the puffy eyes.
