Fulvic Acid
Did you know that our mother earth is about 4.54 billion years old based on the research from NASA? It is so old that we can hardly imagine it. In the beginning, the plants on the earth have been blessed by the rich soil to support their optimal growing conditions. Generations after generations, the old plants are dead and buried under the surface of the earth, which provides a wealth of nutrition to the new babies. So life goes on. These healthy cycles have provided a sustainable environment for both plants and animals to enjoy this abundant planet. The soil under the plants has been exceptionally rich and fertile because it contains a wide range of minerals, trace elements, and microorganisms.

However, our human evolution has changed this healthy food chain due to poor agricultural practices with the excessive usage of petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides. Our soil has been getting thinner and thinner due to overproduction and less care from us.

Still, there are many places on the earth that have been well preserved from the damage of humans. Scientists found some unusual remains called humic deposits. These humic deposits never turn into oil or coal, because they were not exposed to the same tremendous pressures, and were very near the surface with abundant microbial activity in these deposits. These deposits are not common and can be found in various areas worldwide. Some of these deposits are very rich in a magic substance called fulvic acid. Fulvic acid comes from the microbial degradation of humic substances and is created by soil-based micro-organisms (SBOs) to make minerals and other nutrients accessible to plants.

The name fulvic acid derives from the Latin fulvus, which indicates its yellow color. This organic matter is soluble in strong acid (pH = 1). It has an average chemical formula of C135H182O95N5S2 and has a low molecule weight, which is 308.24g/mol. Fulvic acid has a hydrogen-to-carbon ratio greater than 1:1, which indicates a less aromatic character. Fulvic acid is especially reactive with metals and forms strong complexes with Fe3+, Al3+, and Cu2+, which leads to their increased solubility in water so as in our digestive system.

The Chemical Structure of Fulvic Acid

What Makes Fulvic Acid so Unique?

A powerful antioxidant: Fulvic acid is one of the most powerful natural antioxidants and free radical scavengers known. It is a great source of biochemicals, supercharged antioxidants, superoxide dismutases (SOD), enzymes, and other nutrients. It is very effective in neutralizing a wide range of toxic materials including heavy metals, radioactive toxins, petrochemicals, and industrial waste, and safely renders them into harmless forms. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that contain one or more unpaired electrons. They circulate in the body and cause tissue damages and cell mutations, which lead to infections, diseases, and cancers[1].

Tart cherry is another super food for antioxidants.

A supercharged electrolyte and chelator: Scientists have found that fulvic acid is a powerful natural electrolyte that can act as an acceptor or as a donor to help create the balance based on the cell’s requirements. Electrolytes are used by the cells to maintain voltages across cellular membranes and to convey electrical impulses to other cells. When fulvic acid encounters free radicals with unpaired positive electrons, it supplies an equal and opposite negative charge to neutralize the negative effects of the free radicals. On the other hand, if the free radicals carry a negative charge, fulvic acid can supply positive unpaired electrons to balance that charge. If the chemical makeup of the free radical is not beneficial, it can be chelated and mobilized by fulvic acid, eventually, it is eliminated out of the body as waste.[2]

Seaweed also can help remove toxins including radioactive toxins out of the body.

A transporter and enhancer for nutrient absorption: Today most of our plants are not very healthy due to our poor agriculture practice. They contain very little nutrition, especially minerals. Because fulvic acid has a low molecular weight, it has the ability to readily bond the minerals and elements into its molecular structure, which becomes easily absorbed into our body. Fulvic acid’s low molecular weight also helps make the cellular walls more penetrable by reducing their surface tension, thus allowing the cells to breathe easily and efficiently absorb nutrients and water, and eliminate waste. What makes fulvic acid unique is its ability to enhance and increase the absorption of many other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. It acts as a dilator that increases cell permeability to transfer minerals. Fulvic acid also helps dissolve minerals and metals easily in the water. These metallic minerals are chelated by fulvic acid and simply dissolve into ionic forms, and become a part of the fulvic complex, which is biochemically reactive and mobile. Fulvic acid can also bind with organic pollutants such as pesticides and herbicides to form new types of metal ions; it catalyzes the breakdown of toxic pollutants into the waste products that can be eliminated out of our bodies.[2]

Today our soil has been sick and deficient in fulvic acid. Because of this, toxic metals can be easily absorbed by the plants and passed into our food chain. Many of our foods present today are grown in poor soil that is lack nutrition. As a result, more toxic metals are being ingested by us. The good news is that nature provides this amazing healing agent – fulvic acid that has the capability of removing these toxins and heavy metals from our body. The fulvic acid in the soil can also act as a chelator to break down the toxic metals in the first place.

What is Humic Acid?

Humic acid is a fraction of humic substances, which are the major components of the natural organic matter in soil and water, as well as in geological organic deposits that remain after millions of years of microbial decomposition of plants and vegetation. The level of humic acid in the soil can affect the fertility of the soil. The more humic acid, the better the soil retains moisture and the better plants grow. This is because humic acid controls the water-holding capacity in the soul. Humic acid has a black or dark brown color; it is composed of a long chain molecule, which is high in molecular weight. Just like fulvic acid, humic acid can behave as both a donor and acceptor of electrons depending on the need for the electrical balance of a cell’s requirement.

Humic acid and fulvic acid are two main ingredients that make up humic substances. The difference is that humic acid is only soluble in water at certain pH levels. Humic acid is not soluble in water under acidic conditions (pH < 2) but is soluble at higher pH values, while fulvic acid is soluble in water at all pH levels. Both humic acid and fulvic acid may have the ability to help cleanse the heavy metals in the human body.[3]

Humic Acid is a rich source of zinc, and magnesium, which are the most important minerals for increasing collagen, so it can benefit the skin.

Humic acid has been commonly used for agricultural purposes, such as stimulating the metabolism of the plants, increasing the yields of crops, and detoxifying various pollutants.

FDA hasn’t approved humic acid and fulvic acid as dietary supplements for humans yet. If you want to take fulvic acid or humic acid supplements, make sure you choose food grade. It is a good idea to consult your primary healthcare provider if you are on medications to avoid possible drug interactions. It is also suggested to take the recommended doses; the more is not the better.
